Julie Weaverling     Painter, Artist

After watching the documentary and reading the book, Half the Sky, I was physically, emotionally, and spiritually moved. The stories of the girls and women are almost too difficult to watch and read, yet I was compelled to by the understanding that even though painful, we have to be open to the shining light of the truth.  My feeling is that until half the people on the planet are accorded equal status in all areas of life, we will not reach the full potential of humanity.

In response, I am working on a series of artworks relating to this topic.  For me it is an outward expression of my inner thoughts and desire for things to be better.  My painting, Women Hold Up Half The Sky (taken from words from a Chinese proverb) symbolizes the search for truth and a spirit of optimism for the future.  Incredibly, such optimism was alive throughout the stories of the girls and women.

I am offering the original painting as well as giclees and cards.  After researching numerous nonprofits who are working in the area of equality for women, I selected to be the recipient of 25% of sales from these art pieces.  Founded in 1992, Equality Now is an organization that advocates for the human rights of women and girls around the world by raising international visibility of individual cases of abuse, mobilizing public support through our global membership, and wielding strategic political pressure to ensure that governments enact or enforce laws and policies that uphold the rights of women and girls.

We must help fight against discrimination, sexual abuse, trafficking and female genital mutilation.  Thank you for your support.
